Suwanee Creek Greenway: entrances, parking and what’s closed

The short answer

The Suwanee Creek Greenway is a hard-surface trail of about four miles, per the City of Suwanee, connecting nearly 400 acres of parkland. Start at Suwanee Creek Park, 1170 Buford Highway, which has about 100 parking spaces. As of October 17, 2026, the Town Center boardwalk entrance is closed, Martin Farm parking is extremely limited, and GDOT work closes the trail under the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road bridge at times.

Start at Suwanee Creek Park, 1170 Buford Highway. It’s the main trailhead and has about 100 parking spaces (City of Suwanee). Don’t plan on walking onto the greenway from Town Center: that entrance is closed until its boardwalk is repaired. While the Martin Farm Road bridge is rebuilt, the city recommends the McGinnis Ferry Road and Suwanee Creek Park trailheads (City of Suwanee).

The Town Center access to the Greenway via Portland Drive and the boardwalk along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road is closed until the boardwalk is repaired, per the city parks page. (City of Suwanee, checked Oct 17, 2026)

The trail at a glance

  • Length: about four miles, per the city. Other trail sites print different lengths, and they don’t say which endpoints they measured. We use the city’s figure.
  • Surface: a hard-surface, multipurpose trail through woods, wetlands and wildlife habitat. The city doesn’t publish surface, shade or slope notes for each segment, so we don’t either.
  • What it connects: nearly 400 acres of parkland plus residential and commercial areas. A voter-approved 2001 open space initiative extended it.
  • Main trailhead: Suwanee Creek Park, 1170 Buford Highway, with restrooms and an 18-hole disc golf course.
  • Hours: city parks are generally open sunup to sundown.
  • Beyond Suwanee: it connects to the Ivy Creek Greenway in George Pierce Park (Explore Gwinnett).

Every access point and its status

These are the entrances the city lists on its parks page, plus the McGinnis Ferry Road trailhead named in its bridge-work notice. We checked their status on October 17, 2026.

The bridge closures

Separate from the entrances, part of the greenway under the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road bridge closes from time to time for GDOT’s Forsyth–Gwinnett Bridge Rehabilitation Project. The city’s August 28, 2026 release calls these first-phase closures, says more are expected in a second phase, and warns that dates and times can change with construction (City of Suwanee). If a long walk will take you under that bridge, check the city’s news page before you go.

Which entrance to use

  • Driving in: Suwanee Creek Park. It has the only published parking count, plus restrooms and bikes.
  • Starting from downtown: not on foot right now, since the Town Center entrance is closed. Drive to Suwanee Creek Park, or walk the short Brushy Creek Greenway at Town Center on Main instead (below).
  • School days: the Suwanee Elementary access is open only after 4 p.m. on weekdays.
  • A longer outing: start at George Pierce Park and add the Ivy Creek Greenway or the park’s own trails.
  • Martin Farm: skip it for now unless you’re already nearby. The city itself steers people elsewhere.

Bikes

The greenway is a multipurpose trail. The city’s bike program, run with Koloni, keeps bikes at Town Center Park, Town Center on Main and Suwanee Creek Park. The first 2 hours are free, then it’s $2 per hour (City of Suwanee).

Rules on the trail

We didn’t find a separate rules list for the Suwanee Creek Greenway. Here’s what the city does publish. Its park ordinance makes it unlawful to have or drink alcohol in a recreation facility except at events the city has authorized (City of Suwanee). Its posted rules for the Brushy Creek trail require pets on a leash and under control, ban alcohol, and keep unauthorized vehicles off grass and sidewalks. Keep dogs leashed and follow the signs at each trailhead.

  • Under the city park ordinance, possessing or drinking alcohol in a recreation facility is unlawful except at events specifically authorized by the city. City of Suwanee
  • On the Brushy Creek trail, pets must be leashed and under control, and alcohol is prohibited; park hours are sunrise to sunset. City of Suwanee

George Pierce Park and the Ivy Creek Greenway

George Pierce Park is a 304-acre Gwinnett County park inside Suwanee, open sunrise until 11 p.m. unless posted otherwise (Gwinnett County). Its own trails include a 2.6-mile paved trail and a 1.2-mile unpaved trail. It also has an Ivy Creek Greenway trailhead with a 1.25-mile paved trail. The boardwalk photos on our parks pages were taken at George Pierce Park.

The Brushy Creek Greenway: downtown’s short trail

This is a separate trail in DeLay Nature Park, next to Town Center on Main. It’s paved and boardwalk. The city’s parks page calls it 0.4 mile and the park’s own page calls it ½ mile (City of Suwanee). It runs from Suwanee Dam Road at DeLay Road to Stonecypher Road near Main Street, connects directly to PlayTown Suwanee, and has a StoryWalk behind PlayTown. You can park near PlayTown or off Main Street at Town Center on Main. Posted hours are sunrise to sunset, pets must be leashed, and alcohol is not allowed. See Town Center on Main and the parks guide.

Races that use the greenway

The city’s Suwanee Running Series uses Town Center and the greenway, and anyone who finishes five series races in a year gets a finisher t-shirt (City of Suwanee). The organizer says the Beer Chaser 5K on March 6, 2027, at 11 a.m. also uses the greenway (Suwanee Beer Fest). Upcoming dates are on our events page.
