Old Town Suwanee is the historic half of downtown Suwanee. The city describes it as an approximately 56-acre historic district of commercial and residential areas dating from 1871 to the early 1960s, laid out along Main Street beside the Norfolk Southern railroad (City of Suwanee). Main Street runs parallel to Buford Highway just west of the railroad tracks (City of Suwanee). Old Town also holds PlayTown Suwanee, the library, an outdoor pavilion, the red caboose and a small office and retail area.

A self-guided walk through Old Town
The stops are in the order we suggest, starting at the caboose. The city has placed historic markers at six of them: the Rhodes Hotel, Pierce’s Corner, the caboose, Jackson Street Cemetery, the Methodist church and Everett’s Music Barn (City of Suwanee). No source publishes distances between them, so we give none.

1. The red caboose
The caboose stands on Main Street near Pierce’s Corner, overlooking the shops. It dates from 1950, and the city got it from Norfolk Southern to honor a town built on transportation. The Caboose Lighting tradition began here on Thanksgiving 1994 (City of Suwanee). As of October 17, 2026, the city has not published a 2026 Caboose Lighting date; our holiday guide will add it when it does.
2. Main Street Park
This half-acre park at 687 Main Street sits beside the caboose. It reopened on Saturday, August 1, 2026, after a renovation, with a basketball court, a pavilion, open lawn and seating. The court is painted with Momentum, a surface mural by Annabel Joyner. The Burnette-Rogers Pavilion, dedicated in December 1999, honors Minnie Rogers and James Burnette Sr. (City of Suwanee).
3. Pierce’s Corner
The two-story building at 597 Main Street was completed in 1910 and served as one of the area’s few convenience stores. The city has owned it since 2005, and the Downtown Development Authority maintains it (City of Suwanee). Its wall carries Futurist, a mural 97 feet long and 30 feet high (Explore Gwinnett). In June 2025 the DDA announced BOCA Taqueria for the building, with an opening planned for spring 2026 (City of Suwanee). We could not confirm that it has opened, so check before you go.
4. The former Rhodes Hotel
Daniel M. Born built this house on Russell Street in 1880 for his daughter Lillie and her husband, Henry W. Rhodes. It now houses Huthmaker Violins, a stringed-instrument shop (City of Suwanee).
5. Suwanee Methodist Church
A 1909 windstorm destroyed the church building. In 1910 the congregation moved from the west end of Main Street to the hilltop on Scales Road, where the church stands today at 603 Scales Road.
6. Jackson Street Cemetery
In 1919, landowner J.H. Scales deeded land on Jackson Street to “the Colored People of Suwanee” for a cemetery. The cemetery is at 615 Jackson Street, and Grady Daniel is buried here. The city notes he was the first African American to serve on the Suwanee City Council and a WWII Navy veteran.
7. Station Park
A pocket park by the police station at 373 Buford Highway, which the city calls a great place to watch trains go by (City of Suwanee). The station is the former City Hall (City of Suwanee).
8. Everett’s Music Barn
The Everett family began playing bluegrass in Suwanee in 1964, when brothers Randall and Roger started playing and singing together (City of Suwanee). The barn at 4055 Stonecypher Road is alcohol-free and seats around 170 people on church pews (Explore Gwinnett). Its own site says doors 6 p.m., shows 7 p.m. (Everett’s Music Barn); a city page says 8 p.m., so call 678-858-5363 to confirm.
Also on Main Street
The former Bank of Suwanee at 659 Main Street was built in 1908 as a branch of the Bank of Buford, according to the city’s Old Town tour brochure. The same brochure says an 1881 fire destroyed every building downtown but one (City of Suwanee).
Main Street program and GEMS
Suwanee’s downtown revitalization earned accreditation from the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Program (City of Suwanee). In a release posted October 30, 2025, the city said the Georgia Department of Community Affairs named it a Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) community (City of Suwanee). The program’s self-reported 2024 figures: 73 promotional events and 131,200 total attendance (City of Suwanee).
Getting to Old Town
From Town Center, walk through the pedestrian tunnel toward the library and Main Street; for Summer Porch Jam the city called Old Town “a quick ten-minute walk” from Town Center parking (City of Suwanee). The last Porch Jam the city lists was June 13, 2025, and 2026 information was never posted. The city’s parking map marks public lots by the court building next to Station Park, at the police station, by the church on Main Street and by the library (City of Suwanee). See our parking page, and Town Center on Main for PlayTown and the library.
