Suwanee Creek Greenway entrances: which are open in October 2026

The short answer

Start at Suwanee Creek Park, 1170 Buford Highway: it is the main trailhead and the entrance the city recommends. As of October 17, 2026, the Town Center boardwalk access is closed until repaired, Martin Farm Park parking is extremely limited during a bridge rebuild, and the Suwanee Elementary access opens only on weekends and after 4 p.m. on weekdays.

Start at Suwanee Creek Park, 1170 Buford Highway. As of Saturday, October 17, 2026, it is the Suwanee Creek Greenway’s main trailhead (City of Suwanee) and the entrance the city itself steers people to. Two other entrances need a warning. The Town Center access via Portland Drive and the wooden boardwalk is closed until the boardwalk is repaired, and parking at the Martin Farm Park trailhead is extremely limited while the Martin Farm Road bridge is rebuilt (City of Suwanee). Below is every entrance the city lists, what it says about each one, and an easy out-and-back that works with a stroller.

The greenway is a hard-surface, multipurpose trail that winds through about four miles of woods, wetlands and wildlife habitat and connects nearly 400 acres of parkland, according to the parks page of the City of Suwanee. Construction notices change, so check the city’s pages again on the morning you go.

The Town Center access to the Greenway via Portland Drive and the boardwalk along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road is closed until the boardwalk is repaired, per the city parks page. (City of Suwanee, checked Oct 17, 2026)

Every entrance and its status

This table follows the access list on the city’s parks page (City of Suwanee) plus its Martin Farm Road bridge notice. “No closure posted” means the city lists the entrance with no warning attached. It does not mean we walked it.

Entrance What the city says Status on Oct. 17, 2026
Suwanee Creek Park, 1170 Buford Highway Main trailhead; approximately 100 parking spaces Open; the city’s recommended start during the Martin Farm work
McGinnis Ferry Road trailhead Named in the Martin Farm bridge notice as an alternative Recommended; no other details published
Near Suwanee Sports Academy, 3640 Burnette Road Listed access point No closure posted
Martin Farm Park, Martin Farm Road at Suwanee Creek Greenway parking, a small interpretive trail, restrooms, water fountain Parking extremely limited during bridge construction
Town Center area, via Portland Drive and the boardwalk along Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road Wooden boardwalk and bridge access Closed until the boardwalk is repaired
Suwanee Elementary School Weekends, and after 4 p.m. on weekdays Open only in those hours
George Pierce Park (Gwinnett County) Near the soccer and back softball fields No closure posted; county park hours apply

Suwanee Creek Park: the reliable start

The city puts the trailhead at Suwanee Creek Park, an 85-acre park near the southern city limit that has been left largely in its natural state (City of Suwanee). It has approximately 100 parking spaces, the only parking count the city publishes for any greenway entrance. It is also home to Suwanee’s 18-hole disc golf course.

If someone in your group would rather ride, Suwanee Creek Park is one of three pickup spots for the city’s Koloni bikes, along with Town Center Park and Town Center on Main. The first 2 hours are free, and after that it is $2 per hour (City of Suwanee).

Town Center: closed at the boardwalk

From downtown, the obvious way onto the greenway is the spur from the Town Center area along Portland Drive and the wooden boardwalk and bridge that run parallel to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. The city’s access list says this trailhead “is currently closed until the bridge boardwalk is repaired.” The same parks page still lists a connection to the Suwanee Creek Greenway among Town Center Park’s amenities. The closure note is the one that applies today. If a trail map or app shows the Portland Drive spur as a normal route, go by the city.

There is a second, separate issue nearby. A portion of the greenway under the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road bridge has temporary closures for GDOT’s Forsyth–Gwinnett Bridge Rehabilitation Project (City of Suwanee). The city calls these the first phase, expects more temporary closures in a future second phase, and says dates and times can change with construction conditions. If you meet a closure sign on that stretch, treat it as your turnaround point.

Martin Farm Park: limited parking during the bridge rebuild

Martin Farm Park sits at Martin Farm Road and Suwanee Creek, about a half-mile west of Satellite Boulevard. In normal times it offers greenway parking, a small interpretive trail, public restrooms and a water fountain (City of Suwanee). While the Martin Farm Road bridge is rebuilt, the city says access to the trailhead parking lot “is extremely limited due to construction activities” and recommends the McGinnis Ferry Road or Suwanee Creek Park trailheads instead (City of Suwanee).

We did not find a completion date for the bridge work, so check the city’s construction page before counting on Martin Farm. The McGinnis Ferry Road trailhead appears only in that construction notice. The parks page’s access list doesn’t describe it, so we can’t tell you about its parking or facilities.

Suwanee Elementary and the Sports Academy entrances

The access point at Suwanee Elementary School is open on weekends and after 4 p.m. on weekdays only (City of Suwanee). Plan a school-day walk for late afternoon, or use another entrance. The city also lists access near the Suwanee Sports Academy at 3640 Burnette Road, with no warning attached as of our check.

George Pierce Park: the county end

George Pierce Park is managed by Gwinnett County but sits inside the City of Suwanee (City of Suwanee). The city places greenway access near its soccer and back softball fields. The county lists the park at 304 acres, open sunrise until 11 p.m. unless posted otherwise (Gwinnett County). City parks, by contrast, are generally open sunup to sundown (City of Suwanee). Explore Gwinnett notes that the Suwanee Creek Greenway connects to the Ivy Creek Greenway in George Pierce Park (Explore Gwinnett).

An easy stroller-friendly out-and-back

The city doesn’t publish distances between points along the Suwanee Creek Greenway, and we won’t invent them. These three options use only the surfaces and lengths that a source states.

  1. Suwanee Creek Park, by the clock. The greenway is hard-surfaced, the trailhead has parking, and the city lists public restrooms at the park. Decide how long you want to be out, walk for half of it, then turn around. You finish at your car and the restrooms, whatever your pace. Watch for the GDOT closure signs mentioned above.
  2. George Pierce Park, for paved lengths you can plan around. The county lists a 2.6-mile paved trail, a 1.2-mile unpaved trail and an Ivy Creek Greenway trailhead with a 1.25-mile paved trail (Gwinnett County). With a stroller, stick to the paved ones. The county also lists a playground and restrooms there.
  3. Brushy Creek Greenway, the short downtown option. This is a separate trail. The city’s parks page calls it a 0.4-mile paved and boardwalk trail that starts at Town Center on Main and winds through DeLay Nature Park (City of Suwanee); the park’s own page calls it ½ mile. Either way, out and back is about a mile or less. A StoryWalk runs along it behind PlayTown Suwanee (City of Suwanee), and parking is near PlayTown or off Main Street at Town Center on Main.

None of these sources describe grades or slopes, so try a short stretch first with a heavy stroller.

Rules to know before you go

  • No alcohol. The city park ordinance makes it unlawful to possess or drink alcohol in a recreation facility except at events the city specifically authorizes (City of Suwanee).
  • Leash your dog. The city’s published leash rules cover Town Center Park and the Brushy Creek trail, where pets “must be on a leash and under physical control at all times” (City of Suwanee). Bring a leash and bags for the Suwanee Creek Greenway too.
  • Daylight. City parks are generally open sunup to sundown, so start early enough to finish before dark.
